Academic level:                Undergrad. (yrs 1-2)

Discipline:            Business Studies

Title:      Theory covered in this class

Number of sources:        1

Paper instructions:

Instructions:

Students, individually or in pairs, need to submit a written

3-4-page report focuses on a particular theory covered in this class. If you

prefer to work with a classmate, email me by Apr. 7th providing his/her name

and make sure both of you are on the same page, otherwise, I assume you work

individually and will not accept pair work claimed afterwards).

In the first 1-2 pages of the report, you will provide a

summary of the theory. This section of the paper should identify the phenomenon

the theory seeks to explain, the assumptions underlying the theory, and define

at least one key term/concept. Cite your sources, even if you are using the

textbook, e.g., “(Griffin et al., 2018)”, and then list the sources

in the references page (see the APA style resources towards the end of the

document).

In the final 2-3 pages, you must submit a review of a

published academic journal article that reports original research on the

theory. The article (peer-reviewed) should not simply summarize the theory, but

should present original research (meaning the article reports findings of a

study conducted using at least one research method corresponding to the

objective/interpretive approach of the theory (e.g., survey, experiment,

interviews, content analysis, focus groups, ethnography, textual analysis, case

study, or discourse analysis); if you are in doubt about the appropriateness of

the article, please just ask, or you could choose one from the list of articles

provided on Western Online. Your review of the article should describe (NOT

DIRECTLY QUOTE) the primary research questions explored and/or hypotheses

tested which are directly relevant to the theory, and summarize the findings

relevant to those research questions or hypotheses. The review should also

briefly discuss how the findings reported in the research article relate to the

theory (e.g., did findings support the theory? challenged the theory? or

extended the theory? improved understanding of any concept/proposition of the

theory? etc.).

■ Paper

should strive for APA format with proper in-text citations and references page.

Check the resources towards the end of the document for APA style tips.

Providing proper in-text citations after you paraphrased the words of the

original sources, e.g., “(Smith & McDowell, 2015)”, and after

every sentence you write expressing ideas not originally yours, is the key to

prevent unintentional plagiarism. Keep direct quotations at a very minimum. If

you have to use a direct quotation, insert quotation marks and provide in-text citations

with page number of the quoted words after the quoted part, in addition to

providing corresponding citation in the references. APA has specific

requirements on the number of words you can directly quote from a source before

you have to use a standalone block format with specific indentation for the

quoted section in addition to providing in-text citation with page number

according to the manual (see

https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting and

style_guide/in_text_citations_the_basics.html).

Even though Orsino won’t admit it to himself, others around him can see that his love for Olivia is not as constant as he claims. Feste teases Orsino for his inconstancy, saying, “the tailor make thy doublet of changeable taffeta, for they mind is a very opal” (2.4.80-83).

“My state is desperate for my master’s love.” (2.2.37) is it correct? Viola bemoans the fact that she can’t tell Orsino how she feels, stating, “My state is desperate for my master’s love” (2.2.37).

Hello Class,

Discussion Reply (Cultural Scripts)

Reply to The Two discussions (135 Words) for each reply).  Demonstrate more depth and thought than simply stating that “I agree” or “You are wrong.”. You can suggest links for more readings.

The book used for the course

Lightfoot, C., Cole, M., & Cole, S. R. (2018). The Development of Children (8th ed.). Vital Source

Cultural scripts are known as event schemas that happen in a person’s life. These scripts could be fairy tales such as Santa or the Tooth-Fairy. Parents and family members are individuals who participate in these cultural scripts that teach children good things happen to good people. Growing up I would hear, “Maybe if you’re good Santa will buy you…” and I would get all excited but terrified if I made a mistake or did something bad. As I grew up, I never had the talk from my parents about how Santa wasn’t real. Instead, I wondered why Santa wanted to drink Bud Light with his cookies.

Teaching children that the Tooth-Fairy or Santa is real can seem like a harmless cultural script. That is until children start believing something is hiding under their bed or that monsters are goblins. Normally when children realize that the fairy tales, they have gone so many years believing in turns out to be a lie, they are upset for a number of reasons.

The scripts relate to Lev Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, that human development is a social process where children develop their own beliefs, values, morals, and problem-solving skills.

I hope all is well.

This reading was so interesting to me. I never realized that so much of my behavior is based off of cultural scripts. I can say that in familiar situations, I don’t have to do a lot of deep thinking to behave. Instead, I go into autopilot and follow a subconscious script in my mind that guides me.

One cultural script that I can identify with because it followed me into adulthood is the pre process and post process of eating dinner. My grandmother would not compromise her process. I do not still follow ever step however, most.

  • I have to first wash my hands to ensure there were no germs from playing outside
  • Set the dinner table just because that was the thing to do
  • Pray before eating to thank God for the meal and ask him to bless it so that it in no way harms me
  • I had to eat all of my food because there are starving kids that wish they had it
  • After eating, clean up the table, push your chair back up to the table, and put your dishes in the sink.

Even if I am at a restaurant, I still was my hands, which I am sure we all do that especially in a pandemic; pray before eating; whatever food I do not eat, I take home (do not waste it); and I wipe my area of the table and push my chair in after eating.

Another cultural script is during all family reunions that are hosted in Virginia, we have a crab fest. This is because our family for some reason loves crabs from Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay. They start from live crab.

Cultural scripts tie into Lev Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory . Vygotsky viewed human development as a socially mediated process in which children acquire their cultural values, beliefs, and problem-solving strategies through collaborative dialogues with more knowledgeable members of society (McLeod, 2020).

Vocational reflection

Vocational reflection

Instructions

Throughout this course, you have been invited to practice the discipline of examen and reflect on the following prompts:

What or who gave you reason to be thankful today?

Who or what in your life caused you grief or gave you a reason to lament today?

In what ways did you experience joy today?

What happened in your life today that gives you confidence and faith in God?

Write a 100-200 word essay reflecting on your experience with examen. The story of God found in scripture grows from humanity’s lived experience with one another and God. This reflective essay invites you to reflect upon and engage one small aspect of how you experience the world and God. You are free to reflect upon the whole experience of examen or on a particular moment. Some possible options may include:

An overview of your experience with the practice of examen and how you were shaped, challenged or formed.

Focus on the prompt that had a significant impact on you. Why do you believe one of the prompts had such an impact on you? What does this impact say about who you are, the world around you or your understanding of God?

How does the practice of examen connect with course material?

What biblical stories, scriptures or images came to mind during the practice of examen? What might you learn from this?

Did you struggle with the practice of examen? What might you learn from the struggle?

The only grading criteria for this assignment will be whether or not you were on topic (i.e. grammar and formatting will not be graded). This is for your own formation. Take a cue from the psalmists and seek to be honest with yourself and God.

You will also need to submit this assignment to your Vocational Formation ePortfolio in Canvas. If you haven’t already done so, please take a moment to create your ePortfolio. Instructions can be found here. In your assignment submission to your instructor, be sure to also include your ePortfolio link.
