Differential Diagnosis

Differential Diagnosis

Read through the case presentation. Complete the chart identifying three probable diagnoses for the patient presented in the case study. Limit your brainstorming to disorders we have covered in Chapters 5 through 9. You can answer in bullet points, complete sentences, and/or questions but you need to make it clear how each point you make relates to the diagnostic criteria and features of the disorder. Make sure to review the Powerpoint lecture describing the process before completing this assignment.

Instructions:

  1. Specify three possible diagnoses.

For each diagnosis:

  1. Identify THREE symptoms included in the case presentation that fit the diagnostic criteria for that diagnosis and WHY they fit (i.e., the symptom criteria you’re referring to).
  2. Identify AT LEAST ONE detail that does NOT fit with the disorder.
  3. Specify THREE pieces of information you need to know to confirm the diagnosis based on diagnostic criteria or risk factors or epidemiological information that would make the disorder more or less likely.

Case Presentation:

Ms. R is an 18-year-oldfemale who appears guarded uponintake. You notice that she has several bruises on her arms. Her affect is constricted, she does not express much emotion, and her mood is “depressed.”  She reports that she has come to the clinic because hermedical doctor referred her and indicates that she has been experiencing stomachpains. When asked about food intake she avoids eye contact and mumbles that she hasnot had much of an appetite due to “stress.” When you ask for more information, sheadmits to having nightmaresand repetitive thoughts that keep coming back to her despite her attempts not to havethem. Her sleep is irregular, and Ms. R finds it difficult to get up in the morning and go about her day. Ms. R also that states “I just haven’t been feeling like myself lately” and added, “everything feels really far away and not real.”

Pages:       25 pages ( 6875 words, Double spaced

Academic level:  Master’s

Subject or discipline:   Psychology

Title: Signature Assignment

Warm-up Activity 8.1
Access the online text Davis, Stephen F. &Halonen, Jane S. (2001). This text, The Many Faces of Research in the Twentieth Century, covers research reviews in over ten topic areas in psychology, written by the top researchers in the field. You are invited to read all chapters in the book, but be sure to read the chapter that most closely relates to the topic you’ve chosen to study for your own review. Note how the researcher organizes the review, and ends with a conclusion of future directions for research. Consider this a prototype for your own literature review and signature paper. That is, you can learn about the form and organization of a literature review from reading these chapters.

(Note: You will see that because this book was written in the beginning of the twenty-first century, some of the research referred to in the book chapters are now outdated. Further, please note that you will not include ANY references to research in the book chapters in your own literature review.)

Warm-up Activity 8.2
Although you’ve organized your presentation in the outline, when writing, you need to make smooth transitions between sections. For some writing skills to help you deal with this section of your paper visit the Coherence: Transitions Between Ideas website for support on coherence and transitions in writing.

Assignment
Drawing on the references you have collected and following the outline you constructed, prepare a literature review paper on your selected topic. My topic: PTSD in Children.
• Review a minimum of 3-5 themes or patterns that you have identified as emergent within the research on your topic, along with specific citations from the peer reviewed research to support each of these themes.
In other words, you want to describe any similarities or differences that you uncover in the research clearly with citations to support your findings.
Refer to the sample literature reviews listed in Warm-up Activity 8.1 as models for your own finished product. For a completed literature review, you will review and report on approximately 50-60 articles of importance in your area of interest.
You may find as you are writing that you still need to support some parts of your argument better with more research, or that some research does not really fit with your overall organization and plan.

• Write a coherent, well-organized paper. Be sure that your paper has an introduction with a broad overview or outline of what you are going to cover. Clearly state a purpose or thesis regarding what you believe is the best intervention to use for the population and the specific problem that you focused in on based on your review of the research.
• The body of the paper should include a summary of the key patterns or themes that emerge in the research, subdivided by topic and subtopic, with details of relevant research findings. Include a final summary of the main ideas or takeaways that you want to convey to the reader as a result of your review.
• Your summary should draw a conclusion, based on your extensive review and synthesis of the research, with clear recommendations as to what type of program would be best to either prevent or intervene in the problem you focused on, in the population that you chose.
You may find that there is insufficient evidence to draw such a conclusion (and this is a conclusion in and of itself that will suffice), or that a new program needs to be devised to meet the needs of that particular population.
Length: 25-30 pages

Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course, and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy.
