This discussion concerns the ethics involved in reading employees’ emails. A manager has just been told by her boss that proprietary, sensitive material may have been leaked by one of her subordinates. The boss wants the manager to read all her subordinates’ emails and see whether anyone is being unethical. The company has a stated email policy that emails are company property, not private correspondence. However most employees are not aware of this policy and believe that the company does not monitor their emails or Internet activities.

Consider the following questions in your response:

  • As a manager, what would you do?
  • Would you follow the boss’s direction? Why or why not?

M2A1: Case Study: Gawker Media

·
  Instructions

The case analysis method is an excellent learning tool as well as an important assessment instrument. It helps develop your ability to synthesize textbook material and various situational factors. You will analyze a series of cases during the course. You should be able to identify the core issues and suggest solutions. A particular case may deal with issues or concepts that you have not yet reached in the textbook. In that situation, you are expected to research the textual materials to develop your analysis.

For this module, you will analyze the following article:

  • McGrath, B. (2010). Search and destroy.New Yorker, 86(32), 50“61. Retrieved from

Write the case analysis in a 4“6 page Word document. Apply the course readings, classroom discussions, and your personal experience to the case analysis. Include answers to the following questions in your analysis:

  • Would you consider Gawker Media an ethical company? Why or why not? Provide specific examples.
  • If you were one of Gawker’s marketing managers, would you sell remnant advertising space to possibly shady buyers or to graphic artists? œRemnant advertising refers to get-rich scam ads. Gawker offers such space to emerging graphic artists from all over the world. Does this make business sense?
  • Denton lives and works out of SoHo (NYC), but his company is incorporated in Budapest. Why would he incorporate in Budapest when he lives in NYC? What are the pros and cons of incorporating overseas?
