Tom and Sarah: Couples

Tom and Sarah are both 30 years old. They are not married but have been living together for seven years. They have no children but Sarah wants to be a mom. For the past six months, both agree that their relationship has been on a downhill slide but for different reasons. Sarah feels taken for granted and like she is pulling all the weight in the relationship. Tom feels nagged, unappreciated, and misunderstood. Tom says the only way he can feel better is if he has “a few drinks” every night, but Sarah says he often smells like alcohol when she comes home from work every day. She has noticed excess wine bottles and beer cans in the recycling bin but Tom denies drinking more than “his usual amount”.

Sarah works 50+ hours/ week as a child care professional and is attending online college part time to get her Master’s degree. Tom has a Master’s degree in philosophy. Since graduating five years ago, he had several part time teaching jobs and is currently unemployed. Sarah believes that he plays video games most of the day and is angry that he is not doing more to look for a job.

Sarah made the suggestion to attend therapy and Tom reluctantly agreed, commenting that therapy won’t work because Sarah will choose a therapist who is on “her” side. These are the reasons why they are presenting for therapy today.
