Purpose:

The goal of this assignment is to give students an opportunity to integrate the skills and knowledge acquired throughout the semester in this course on the Psalms. You are being asked to use your exegetical skills to produce a teaching based on the psalm on one of the Sunday or feast day reading. Your project should include the following:

  1. The world of the Text: what does it actually say?
  2. The world Behind the Text: How does our knowledge of ANE culture and religion enhance our understanding of this psalm?
  3. The world in Front of the Text: How is this psalm received today? How does a Christological interpretation impact our understanding? How does the psalm work with the readings of Sunday or Feast Day? Identify the Sunday or Feast Day the psalm you have chosen is used in the liturgy. What are the other readings, and how do they shape your reading of this text?

Steps 1-3 should be written in essay form. Maximum 6 pages (3 sources)

  1. Write a 10 to 20-minute (2 pages) presentation based on your work on this psalm. This section of your work should include a good description of the audience you are targeting, followed by teaching itself that integrates steps 1 to 3.
