Essay Structure
Instead of an introduction, you should have one sentence which states your thesis statement. Your thesis statement should be generated by task four and use the following format: I will argue that [Singer] has a better solution to the case of Canadia because [insert your reason here.] So you need neither a typical introduction nor conclusion. The grading rubrics are attached to each the submission page of each essay so you can see the specific breakdown of points.
Explain the case at hand back in your own words.
This should be no more than one paragraph. It’s just a quick summary so I know how you’re understanding the case.
Explain the theories of the two philosophers that are assigned in that particular week.
This should be where you show that you understand the arguments of the philosophers that are covered in a particular topic. So if you’re writing about the Global Justice Essay, you’d explain the arguments of Singer and Hardin.
This should be completely neutral — just a succinct presentation of the arguments that isn’t influenced by or that mentions the case.
This should be at least two paragraphs, and probably more like four.
Present an argument applying the philosophers’ arguments to the case at hand.
Here you should take the work you did in task two and apply that to the story. So if you were writing on Global Justice, you might say that Singer theory would require that we all give the aide to Canadia because of reason Y and then justify that. You’d then do the same with Hardin (although with an obviously different action.)
This should be at least two paragraphs, and could easily be four.
Present an argument explaining why one philosopher has a better solution to the case at hand.
Due to this you need to explain what you think a successful solution to the case would demonstrate and then show how one of the philosophers does this better than the other.
This should be two paragraphs.
Explain what you would do and why.
This should be exactly one paragraph.

<<<Same Sex Marriage Essay QUESTION>>>
In this essay you have five tasks:
Give a clear and concise explanation of the case at hand.
Give a thorough philosophical exegesis of the relevant aspects of Jordan’s and Boonan’s theories. (Click here for some tips on how to do a successful exegesis.)
Present an argument applying the philosophers’ arguments to the case at hand. This should include an argument justifying which couple should receive the marriage license.
Present an argument explaining why one of the philosophers can be viewed as offering a more successful solution to the case at hand.
In no more than one paragraph explain who you think should get the license and why.
The village of Minto has one marriage license to give out per month. Each month, a lottery is drawn to select two couples (from the 100s who apply each month) for consideration. This month, the two couples are Toby and Tayler and Dick and Jane. Dick, a cisgender man, and Jane, a cis-gender woman are aspiring actors. This was their first time submitting their names to the marriage license lottery. They want to get married so that they can be eligible for the new reality tv show called I Hate My New Spouse. They don’t actually even like each other, but that will work well for the premise of the show. If they win, they each get one million dollars and will definitely get divorced after. Toby, a transgender man (born female, identifies as a man, had sex reassignment surgery 4 years ago), and Tayler, a transgender woman (born male, identifies as a woman, had sex-reassignment surgery 3 years ago) have been partners for 10 years. They also have one biological child together (Toby carried the baby before he got his sex-reassignment surgery and they used Tayler’s sperm). They have been submitting their names to the marriage license lottery for the past 8 years. This is the first time their names have been drawn. Who should get the marriage license?
