Recently, there has been a huge movement legislatively to provide equal rights to gay men and women who wish to marry their same sex partners. As the movement has gained more support, many transgender people are coming out and demanding equal treatment as well. Some decisions, such as unisex bathrooms have generated tremendous controversy.
Using your book, recent media and the videos below, prepare three posts. Remember each post should reflect one of these sources, not just your opinion.
Transgendered people have been around since the beginning of humanity; however, most cultures have shunned people who who engage in behaviors that are contrary to observable sex traits. Some cultures, including several Native American tribes and South Asian people have been more receptive to transgendered people. In the U.S., there has been relatively little awareness or education regarding transgender. Often, it has been incorrectly assumed that transgendered people are “gay,” further stigmatizing them. Recent pop culture media sources have been filled with stories about transgender awareness, most notably with the announcement by Bruce Jenner, who is now Caitlyn Jenner. After reviewing the videos below and doing some of your own research, talk about the challenges faced by transgendered people from economic, political (civil rights?), mental health, etc perspectives. If you had a friend who said his/her child was transgendered, what advice or resources might you suggest?
