The definition of “Carpe diem”
I saw Dead Poets Society and I heard for the first time the words “Carpe diem”. In the movie, the protagonist Keating
explains the phrase, “Carpe diem” with this sentence: “Because we are food for worms, lads. Because, believe it or not,
each and every one of us in this room is one day going to stop breathing, turn cold and die.” (“ Dead Poets Society” 14:40－
14:53), that is why I “seize the day”. But the question is how to seize the day? For Robert Herrick, Carpe diem is “Then be
not coy, but use your time: And while ye may, go marry:” (“To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time ”1314).
Ben Jonson
suggests that “Drink to me only with thine eyes, And I will pledge with mine.” (“Song to Celia” 12).
Edmund Waller tells us
“Of beauty from the light retired: Bid her come forth, suffer herself to be desired.” (“Go, Lovely Rose” 1214).
In past
centuries, these poets told me what is “Carpe diem” and how to seize the day in various ways. The majority people
narrators want to talk to is women, and most themes are about love. In my opinion, life should be enjoyed.
In “GO, Lovely Rose,” Edmund Waller has given us a beautiful and graceful poem. He persuaded women to value the time
and stimulated women to allow themselves experience the joys of life. Roses are always metaphorically referred to the sign
of love and lovers. Edmund uses roses to symbolize women and indirectly expresses his appreciation to women. The first
cinquain is filled vitality and use vivid roses to represent young women:
Go, Lovely Rose –
Tell her that wastes her time and me,
That now she knows,
When I resemble her to thee,
How sweet and fair she seems to be. (15)
Rhyme is actually components of poetry. The second cinquain is very rhyme at the end of each line. Edmund encourages
women to show the beauty of female and use inverse metaphor to egg on conservative women:
Tell her that’s young,
And shuns to have her graces spied,
That hadst thou sprung
In deserts where no men abide,
Thou must have uncommended died. (610)
