Respond And Discuss

The World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest that the social-ecological model be used to better understand health and the effect of potential prevention strategies.¹ The four-level social-ecological model also plays an important role in prevention strategy implementation and determining the impact of the top public health issues. This model considers the complex interplay between individual, interpersonal, community, and societal factors. It allows us to understand the range of factors that put people at risk for poor health outcomes. The overlapping rings (i.e., individual / community) in the model illustrate how factors at one level influence factors at another level.

After reading the “Pertussis,” please respond to the following questions:

  1. What are some steps that could have been taken to prepare local health departments, in anticipation of the disease spreading to their areas?
  2. What were some of the strengths and limitations to the unified command structure in this outbreak?
