Week 8 “Opioid” Paper Guidance: For the Week 8 paper, the purpose of the assignment is to research state regulations which guide prescriptive practice related to education, prescribing controlled substances (particularly opioids), and obtaining an advanced practice license. This can be done by choosing two different states (Pennsylvania and West Virginia) and comparing and/or contrasting their respective governing regulations. This paper should be 10-15 pages long and follow APA format.

Your paper should include the following sections and headings (follow APA format):

Controlled Substance & Opioids (this is a heading) – What is a controlled substance in general and an opioid in particular? What is it used for?

Opioid Misuse & Abuse (this is a heading) – What is Opioid Misuse? What are the reasons, cited in the evidence, that people typically misuse/abuse opioids?

Opioid Epidemic (this is a heading) – What is the current problem with opioids in this country? How many accidental deaths (overdose) and acts of violence or crimes occurs because of opioids (cite the evidence)? How many medical emergencies are related to opioid use (cite the evidence)? Who regulates its use in the US? What is the purpose of the paper? What is the purpose of the paper? Why is this important to know as a provider?

State Regulations (this is a heading) – Identify the two different states you’ve choosen to research (make this count by choosing your home state and maybe a state you love to visit, hope to relocate to, etc…), discuss compare and contrast the rules/regulations that govern opioid prescribing and use for the Advance Nurse Practitioner.
