During the week, as always, please monitor the news and the class Twitter feed. Please look for and discuss with your classmate’s news reports you notice that discuss special populations and disasters.

Based on the resources for this week and your own research incorporate some of the areas that were experienced by those who were interviewed and impacted by the cyclone. Please consider the following questions:

-What were some of the public health issues that were being experienced on the island and by the people living on the island?

-How did the women, children, and the elderly deal with the impact of debris from the cyclone?

-Further discuss what were some of the warning signs that were ignored regarding the approaching cyclone.

-How could the warning signs that occurred been mitigated by the local community?

-What types of preparatory efforts could have been made regarding the approaching cyclone?

-If you were a mental health worker that was dispatched to this location, what would be some of the main areas that would need to be considered concerning mental issues that may arise? Challenge your classmates’ thoughts and ideas concerning their plans for response to the mental health challenges that may occur.

It is obvious this type of disaster had a psychological impact upon this population. If you were an international disaster response specialist concerning mental health, what would be some of the special challenges that you would face, and how would you address those issues (list at least 3 examples).
