The Benefits of Listening to Music
Studies on the benefits of listening to music suggest that it may improve IQ, alter the listener’s mood, and assist in general learning. Researchers even believe that the simple act of listening to music can cause the brain to produce a specific chemical. This chemical has positive effects on things such as coordination.
For this writing project, you are asked to discuss and appraise the role of music in a balanced life. More specifically, how has music helped you balance your life? Consider music examples or discussions from class, as well as your experiences throughout your life, in which music seemed to have a more than average participation in some part of the process. Has a specific song, record, or artist helped you through a difficult time? Does a specific song trigger strong memories as if you are transported back to moments in your past? Do you rely on music to assist you with daily tasks? Share your thoughts in a short paper with the following criteria:
- Minimum of one, maximum of two pages in length, single spaced.
- Cite at least three articles/books/websites. If you cite an online source, please
provide the web address for verification purposes. Provide a Reference List
identifying your works cited.
- Cite sources in the paper itself using in-text APA style citations.
***Please adhere to appropriate writing practices. Include an introductory paragraph, at least one paragraph with a strong topic sentence followed supportive ideas, and a third paragraph providing an effective conclusion. Spelling and grammar will be considered.
Papers must be typed, printed, and submitted via hardcopy. Email submissions will not be accepted. You may turn in papers before their due dates.
You may find the following articles useful in generating thoughts and points of reflection for your own experience. Feel free to cite these in your papers.

Using In-text Citation
Include an in-text citation when you refer to, summarize, paraphrase, or quote from another source. For every in-text citation in your paper, there must be a corresponding entry in your reference list.
APA in-text citation style uses the author’s last name and the year of publication, for example: (Field, 2005). For direct quotations, include the page number as well, for example: (Field, 2005, p. 14). For sources such as websites and e-books that have no page numbers, use a paragraph number. More information on citing sources without pagination is given on the APA Style web page.
Example paragraph with in-text citation
A few researchers in the linguistics field have developed training programs designed to improve native speakers’ ability to understand accented speech (Derwing, Rossiter, & Munro, 2002; Thomas, 2004). Their training techniques are based on the research described above indicating that comprehension improves with exposure to non-native speech. Derwing et al. (2002) conducted their training with students preparing to be social workers, but note that other professionals who work with non-native speakers could benefit from a similar program.

Citing Web Pages In Text
Cite web pages in text as you would any other source, using the author and date if known. If the author is not known, use the title and the date as the in-text citation (for long titles just use the first few words). Your in-text citation should lead your reader to the corresponding entry in the reference list. For sources with no date use n.d. (for no date) in place of the year: (Smith, n.d.). Below are examples of using in-text citation with web pages.
