Late Geometric vase
Paper instructions:
Coverage: The quiz will cover the material in the assignments and lectures of January 15 and January 22: the Dark Age, the œGreek Renaissance, and Homer (with the associated reading in Pomeroy) and Books 1-8 of the Odyssey. It will not cover the Greek alphabet or the lecture on the Bronze Age in the first class.
What to study: Important facts, ideas, and concepts. you might reasonably be expected to identify Nichoria and Lefkandi, and tell why they are significant (they were discussed in both Pomeroy and the lecture of Jan. 15. You should know the significant developments of the œGreek Renaissance. You will want to be able to tell what a polis was. You could be asked to describe what a Late Geometric vase looked like, and what kinds of scenes might be depicted on it (illustrations in Pomeroy). For the Odyssey, make sure you know the basic facts of the plot and can identify important characters. What are some of the advantages of the narrative’s beginning on Ithaca and not with Odysseus?
