Individual case study

In 1628, the Swedish Warship ‘Vasa’ set sail from a port in Stockholm on its maiden voyage. In less than a mile it sank to bottom of the Harbour. In 1961 the Vasa was found and raised in excellent condition, allowing archaeologists to study it in great detail and determine why Sweden’s most expensive project ever undertaken at the time failed so tremendously._x000D_
Research the Vasa and reflect upon its unfortunate fate in the context of systems engineering. Seek to answer the questions: “Why did the Vasa sink within minutes of its maiden voyage?”; and, “How might the same type of catastrophic event be prevented given our modern understanding of systems engineering?”_x000D_
This is a beautiful story, and one that carries a remarkable number of lessons for both systems engineers and project managers. There are many resources online and in libraries that tell the tale of the Vasa—you are encouraged to draw your own lessons from them._x000D_
