Icons are important because they show how humans so often associate visual representations with complex and important ideas. Even today when tension and hatred exists between cultures icons the symbols of cultures are often the first to be destroyed. This is referred to as iconoclasm- the destruction of images that are symbols of something greater. Instances of iconoclasm range from burning the American flag to inscribing swastikas on murals. For this week’s discussion I would like you to explore one instance of iconoclasm and discuss it with your class. Be sure to address the following points:
– What the imagery means to a culture
-Who destroyed the imagery and what were they trying to achieve
-How was the iconoclasm dealt with (Was the artwork restored? Did it start a revolt?)

Keep your research for this discussion post brief and try to stay focused on recent events.
