Read the first 3 or 4 chapters of the Handmade’s tale and argue how, through the use of coded language, the Republic of Gilead is able to so radically oppress its population. In other words, how did a theocracy manage to replace a democracy and make many people accept this change? What words do they use that have double meanings and how are these words used? What colors? What signs? Look at all the way information is communicated or not communicated and analyze each one to show how Gilead is able to control its population through language.
