Review

An unprecedented number of Americans have been diagnosed with mental illnesses. Despite significant investments in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses, health disparities are concentrated in low-income and rural communities. Moreover, approximately 300,000 individuals with severe psychiatric disorders are incarcerated in the nation’s jails and prisons at any given time. The concomitant increases in mental illness prevalence and increased likelihood of being incarcerated as a mental health patient have created a significant public health challenge for America.
