Magazine Article Comparison Essay

Write a 750-word paper comparing two different articles:
Article #1 – TIME Magazine article, This Is the No. 1 Driver of Diabetes and Obesity.
Article #2 – Newsweek article, Big Sugar’s Fight against Science at the Expense of Public Health.
Take notes of main points and any discrepancies you spot between the two perspectives. Look for value-laden words or labels that appear in one article and are different or missing in the other article. You will need to pinpoint at least five major differences between the articles, and discuss how those differences tie into the concepts from this lesson: Encoded Messages, Social Conflict, Moral Agency, Ethics, and Morality.
• 750-words
• List the titles of the articles, authors, magazine and full publication data, including date, volume, issue, and page numbers
• Locate and describe at least five major differences between the two articles
• Discuss concepts from this lesson: Encoded Messages, Social Conflict, Moral Agency, Ethics, and Morality:

o Morals are the beliefs of the individual or group as to what is right or wrong. Ethics are the guiding principles which help the individual or group to decide what is good or bad. Morals may differ from society to society and culture to culture. Morals are expressed in the form of general rules and statements.
o Moral agency is an individual’s ability to make moral judgments based on some notion of right and wrong and to be held accountable for these actions. A moral agent is “a being who is capable of acting with reference to right and wrong.”
o Social conflict theory is a Marxist-based social theory which argues that individuals and groups (social classes) within society interact on the basis of conflict rather than consensus.
o Encoded messages are messages that are hidden within the “message”.
