Part 1- Population

Who are African youth and their representation within the United States? Discuss child protective services and their role in the child welfare system. Discuss the racial disparities in the welfare system when investigating child abuse and neglect cases and how this leads to the overrepresentation of African American youth within the foster care system.

Part 2- Policy

Discuss either the African American child welfare act or the Illinois African American family commission act in 2004. Going into detail about this specific policy and what it does. Emphasizing the policy’s role in decreasing this over-representation of African American youth.

Part 3- Program Model

Discuss the family preservation model — define what family preservation is, the purpose of the family preservation model, and how this is beneficial for this specific population. How do the needs and services provided by this act support this population?

Talk about the kinship care model and the purpose of this intended model. Descirbe how if a child has to be taken from their parent, they should be placed with a family member or a person within their social network. Describe how this an added benefit for the child.
