Instructions
Adapted from: https://positivepsychologyprogram.com/positive-psychology-exercises/#best-possible-self
- Part 1- Review three evidence-based resiliency programs that include a variety of exercises for participants.
- Part 2- Perform the exercise below.
- Part 3- Write a reflection paper or make an audio recording after visualizing your “best possible self” two days during the week. Pick a day at the start of the week, and then another day at the end of the week. This exercise has been adapted from Sheldon and Lyubomirsky, 2006. You can choose to draw a picture of your best self or write about it.
This exercise is more effective when you are specific. Imagine the future in detail, a new job, new home, where you want to live. The more specific you are, the more engaged you will be in identifying your strengths and enhancing resilience.
Set a timer or stopwatch for 15 minutes, in this time you are to think about your best possible future self.
See your life the way you always imagined it would be like, your best possible self. Picture that you have performed to the best of your abilities and potential and have achieved the things you wanted in life.
Do not censure yourself or edit grammar or punctuation. Just focus on writing all your thoughts and emotions in an expressive way or make a drawing of your thoughts and feelings.
Be sure to have several sheets of paper available for this exercise.
Reflect on your feelings and responses after completing the initial exercise. Think about the following questions: What effects did this exercise have? Did this exercise affect you more emotionally or does it affect your current self-image? Did it motivate or inspire you? How? Did it make you want to change anything? Explain. How did this exercise affect you overall? Which character strengths did you identify?
Feel free to include the drawing with the reflection paper and upload. No art experience is necessary. The drawing can be abstract or anything you choose.
Optional: You may want to meet with your professor via Zoom or Skype and discuss the exercise.
Length: 3 to 4 pages
Resources: Cite the 3 evidence-based resiliency programs you reviewed.
Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards where appropriate.
