You will need to use the simulators here to help answer questions #1-3 below
1. What is the distance modulus for a G4 star with an apparent magnitude of 10? What is the actual distance to the star? (2 marks)
2. Explain how you use the calibrated main sequence in the œCluster Fitting Explorer in order to find the distance to the Praesepe open cluster. What is the distance modulus for that cluster? What is the distance to that cluster? (3 marks)
3. What is the distance modulus for SN1998aq? What is the distance to that supernova? How does this help us determine the distance to other galaxies? (3 marks)
4. Astronomers measure the redshift of light of galaxies far from our own. They quantify this redshift with a parameter œz. The table shown in the link below allows you to calibrate the redshift of a galaxy with the age of that galaxy. Visit the table and determine the age of a galaxy with a redshift of 0.5, and the age of a galaxy with a redshift of 3.0. (2 marks)
