Being a nurse and advancing to a higher degree such as an NP requires a lot of training and mentorship. We as a nurse are taught of the basic knowledge of human anatomy and pathophysiology that we carry out on our everyday work skills. We are then relied upon the doctors to make critical decisions to make for our patients in emergency situations. This makes us competent enough to prove to ourselves that we possess those skills of competency and appropriate critical judgement. As we advance to becoming an NP, we can become skillful and knowledgeable to practice on our own with the proper training and education. Nurse Practitioner graduates have knowledge, skills, and abilities that are essential to independent clinical practice (The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties. (2012).
My expectation of this course is that it will help me to be fully equipped with knowledge and skills to carry out the duties expected of me and to be fully proficient in doing it. I hope that in the end I have mastered the skills I need to succeed in this career.
As a student studying to become an NP, the integration of previous experiences with the education attained from Walden will help mold us to become better in our chosen career. Since we are integrating theoretical learning, scientific evidence and critical knowledge in our work, it will help us with the challenges of practicing NP roles. Within this role, the adult-gerontology primary care NP synthesizes theoretical, scientific, and contemporary clinical knowledge for the assessment and management of both health and illness states (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2010). I’ve been taking care of young adults, middle-age adults, and elderly in our clinic and it’s a good thing that I have experienced how to take care of this population. I learned how to adjust different medication dosages to the different age group and monitor the effects on the patients. I’ve learned to educate the patients how to manage their fluid management, DW maintenance, prevent access infection as well evaluate the appropriateness of teaching.
Some of the challenges, is that you will come across some difficult patients. You will educate them, but they refuse to listen. I’ve dealt with patients with uncontrolled hypertension, heart problem, and diabetes, (it’s complications). Some of the medical issues that happen in our clinic have taught us to make medical decisions by ourselves. Some of these situations make us think what is best for our patients. Is it the best treatment for our patient? Did it stabilize them? Scary as it may seem to be on your own, but it is tolerable. It is very challenging to be on your own. I was just a nurse who relies much on my doctor for the diagnosis, medication, and treatment. Now, I have to stand on my own to be the one to do the diagnosis, to be the final word. It’s not an easy path but we need to do it.
As with the goal that I have and the proficiencies this course may bring, I am hoping that NP get the full autonomy to practice in their own state. The studies here in this course are equipped with everything we need to become familiar with patient interaction and diagnosing. It was found that NP compared with doctors can do the same duties as the doctors does and is more cost saving. Patient have more quality time and better outcome. Since full practice authority was granted, the NPs acknowledged having become a recognized resource on policy for their state legislators and having the ability to deliver more innovative care to meet population needs, but allowed that more time and education were needed to widely disseminate the value of NP full practice authority (Taylor, & Gilchrist, 2020).
