Paper DETAILS:
type a 500-word paper that summarizes “Summer Heat” (Kaba) and “Where Will You Be?” (Enomoto) and that compares and contrasts them.
Offer a concise but thorough summary of the position that each of your two sources is advocating. Stay as close to the text as possible, paraphrasing the main points and quoting the author’s exact words at times to tie your summary to the original text. Cite page numbers for any quotations in parentheses after the quote (just the number; no pp. or p.). Your aim is to hand over to your readers your understanding of WHAT this text is arguing for. Signal phrases such as “Freedman says/notes/ states,” or “according to Fujikane,” will help you designate what is called intellectual property. You will not have room to cover all the points an author makes, so you will need to synthesize the most important information for us, tell us what position the author is advocating, and then offer quotes from the text itself to demonstrate that the author is arguing what you say s/he’s arguing. Do not offer your own comments, opinions, or arguments about what the text says, and do not offer a rhetorical analysis of the writing. Stick to content: what is the author saying in this text? What position is s/he advocating? What are his/her most important reasons and supporting claims? What kinds of support does s/he offer in support of this position (Facts, Personal experience, Examples, Statistics, Comparisons and analogies, Appeal to authority, Cause-effect relationships, Testimonies, Interviews, Historical precedent, etc…)?
Your summaries can be in separate paragraphs. If you organize your essay in this manner, make sure to follow the summaries with at least one full paragraph that compares and contrasts the two. What similarities can you identify between the two essays? What differences can you identify? You may comment, for example, on where the two authors seems to agree or disagree at the level of idea, but you might also discuss where they overlap or differ in writing style, use of imagery, use of symbolism, use of evidence, and so on.
