Analyze the work of two scholars who share related interests but operate from different disciplinary perspectives.
First, pick one of the following broad themes to guide your research:
POWER MIGRATION
RACE MONEY
RELIGION SEX
Use the resources available to find two scholarly books, book chapters, or peer-reviewed articles that relate to this theme. The first of these sources must be
by a historian who studies the ancient world. The second must be by a scholar in an academic discipline other than History. It’s up to you. The purpose of the paper is to compare their different approaches to the shared theme you’ve chosen. This doesn’t mean that you must find two pieces of scholarship from different disciplines that discuss the same thing in the same way, since ancient historians and biologists, for example, tend to ask different questions and work with different sorts of data.
After having carefully read and digested the two pieces of scholarship you’ve found, write a paper of
no more than 1,500 words that compares them by addressing the following points:
• The theme that links these scholarly works, and how you’ve chosen to interpret it.
• The subject of each work. What, specifically, is it about?
• The questions each scholar asks. What drives this research?
• The evidence each scholar uses. What sorts of data are under examination?
• The argument each scholar makes. How do they go about proving their points?
• The relationship between these works. Are there any similarities or overlaps in their approaches to the shared theme, or are they wildly different?
