Discourse Community Reflection and Mini Annotated Bibliography

Due: Tuesday, May 15th by 11:59 pm (Canvas)

Discourse Community Reflection

At this point in the term, you have been reading, writing, and thinking about a particular discourse community and the issues its members care about. Your goal for this assignment is to narrow down your approach to this community by articulating two things:

  • A research question related to the rhetorical strategies of your discourse community
  • A concrete problem that your discourse community is trying to solve

For example, if I were studying the discourse community of the #MeToo Movement, I might come up with something like this:

  • Research Question: Why has the #MeToo movement been so successful in creating change, relative to other movements? What sets it apart?
  • Problem: Creating accountability for perpetrators of sexual harassment and assault

In addition to identifying a research question and problem, you should answer the following questions in 300 words or more:

  • What patterns have you started to recognize in exploring the way that your discourse communities talk/write/think about issues of shared concern?
  • How does this discourse community use language differently to pursue those shared interests? What sets this group apart from others?
  • Describe your sense of some of the underlying values/goals/presuppositions that shape your discourse community.

Annotated Bibliography

You will identify and annotate at least three sources that will help you answer your research question above and/or help you learn more about the problem that your discourse community is trying to solve. Here are some further guidelines:

  • At least ONE source should be a scholarly, peer reviewed article
  • At least ONE of the sources should provide an example of how your discourse community talks about issues of shared concern. It should show your discourse community “in action,” so to speak.
  • Along with providing a full citation of each source, you will annotate each source using the rhetorical précis format.
