Sexual Politics of Interracial Relationships in the Americas

Taken from syllabus: “Students are required to write a paper assessing the similarities between the political, social or economic experiences of African Americans as compared to Afro-Brazilians. Specifically, the student will chose a topic, area of interest (i.e. Affirmative action, mortality rates, welfare, violence, slavery) and complete a comparative analysis of how these topics are experienced in Brazil and America. This comparison should end with a thorough analysis of how these similarities and differences impact ‘post-racial’ theories in the United States and the theory of ‘racial democracy’ in Brazil.”

Main goal of this paper is to examine how (heterosexual) interracial relationships impacts the theories of post-racism and racial democracy in addition to a historical analysis. It is important that the paper detail the similarities of the specific racial issue, experience or policy of both AFRICAN AMERICAN AND BLACK BRAZILIAN cultures.

The paper can be broken into 3 main parts; the history of sexual relationships amongst slaves in Brazil and the US, sexual politics of slave-master relationships in Brazil and the US immediately after the abolishment of slavery, and finally the politics interracial relationships in the 20th and 21th centuries.
