  • Write 3 unique questions you would ask a client to obtain further information about their support system including family and friends.  What is the rationale for each question?
  •
    • Are there any other people in your household besides yourself? If so, who are they? This question will tell us if our patient has people living with them in the house. It will also allow us to know who it is and help us gauge how much help and support they may get from the person they are living with.
    • Do your friends or family live close? If so, who and how far? This question helps us as nurses understand if our patient is isolated or have people close to them that they get to see more often. Being alone could cause a patient to not have as strong of a support group, yet if family and friends live nearby, they may stop in or get to see that individual more often causing them to have a better support system.
    • Do you feel you can talk to your friends and family when you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed? If so, does it help and if not why? These are important questions because even if the individual has family and friends around either living with them or seeing them outside of the home the individual may not feel they can talk to them for many reasons. Having people you trust and can open up with helps create a strong support system, it’s not just about how many people are around you. So, assessing whether or not they have people or a person they can talk to will help us know if we need to help with possibly finding someone they can talk to or that they feel they already have that outlet in their life.
