Unintended pregnancy is a global epidemic that negatively impacts communities, women, and their families, with over 50% of the cases ending with unsafe abortions. Rape and contraceptive failure or non-use are among the factors that contribute to unintended pregnancy. The most common consequences are unsafe abortion, infertility, and maternal death. Recent studies have demonstrated that these potentially life-threatening complications can be prevented by better access to contraceptive services, emergency contraception, legal abortion services, and societal and cultural changes that allow women to make their own reproductive choices. Faith-based organizations have attempted to address these issues with family planning programs, which has resulted in better health outcomes and a reduced number of unintended pregnancies.
