Fundamentals of management accounting

A friend has asked you for some advice: ‘My small business now makes a profit; I am only too aware of this, as I now face a big tax bill each year when my tax accountant has prepared my annual accounts. However, I don’t feel much better off personally, so this is not quite what I had expected when I took the risk of resigning my job and setting up my own firm. The accountant is now trying to persuade me to pay her even higher fees, by letting her prepare monthly “management accounts” for me. She says that I would also benefit from something called CVP analysis on my various product lines. I know that you are now doing an MSc. What does she mean here, and is this likely to be worth my paying her for?’

In formulating your Key Concept Exercise, consider the following questions:

  • What is the difference between financial reporting and management accounting?
  • What are the benefits and potential problems associated with cost-volume-profit (CVP) analysis?
  • What advice would you give your friend?

In an approximately 500-word response, address the following issues/questions:

  • Outline the difference between financial reporting and management accounting information and explain the benefits and potential problems associated with cost-volume-profit (CVP) analysis.
  • How might the technique that you have discussed assist your friend in the effective management of his business resources?
  • What advice would you give your friend?
  • Base your answer on research, your readings, and your own experiences. Please cite all references.

Be sure to read over your Key Concept Exercise before submitting it to your Instructor. Make sure the spelling and grammar are correct and the language, citing and referencing you use when providing your opinion are appropriate for academic writing.

Step Two – Research Proposal

Research Proposal

Once you have a supervisor allocated, you need to produce a research proposal. This should be sent directly to your supervisor 4 weeks after your workshop. It is important that you work closely with your supervisor and decide on how you will maintain your relationship. Attached is a guide to writing your Research Proposal.

Step Three – Consider Research Ethics

Research Ethics
Please read the research ethics guidelines and complete an ethics form before undertaking any research for your project.
A completed ethics form must be appended to your final Project. You cannot undertake fieldwork or distribute questionnaires, etc., without having your ethics form signed off (normally electronically) by your supervisor.

• Please be reassured – it is very unusual indeed for there to be an issue with ethics. Normally the form can be signed-off (or returned for slight amendment) by your supervisor. There may be the very rare eventuality that if – for example – your area of research necessitates collecting sensitive personal information, then the Faculty Ethics Committee will review your plans and grant / withhold approval.
Please note that, in addition to completing the ethics form – you must make every effort to keep all data that you collect anonymous and secured (as per the Data Protection Act in the UK and whatever other legislation applies in the jurisdiction and / or environment in which you are working). You are strongly encouraged to prepare Participant Information Sheets and other materials for your research respondents and ensure their anonymity (in all media) unless explicitly stated by respondents that they are content to be identifiable.
For commercially sensitive and other proprietary information – work with your supervisor and Module Leader (if necessary) to ensure that the businesses or other organisations that you are working for are appropriately anonymised and not identifiable.
