The dissertation exercise is intended to help students acquire relevant critical appraisal skills, in anticipation of, and preparation for, their research projects next year. In recent years we have made efforts to keep students with the same tutor wherever possible throughout the programme, and in most instances the project supervisor will be the personal tutor similar to each student from earlier years of study. With that in mind we feel that it is appropriate to use this assignment as an opportunity to start to acquire the background knowledge required for the third year project. Thus, each student must agree with their tutor a potential area of study for the third year project over the coming weeks and the dissertation will be anticipated to bear at least some similarity to the introductory portion of the third year project.
As our academic staff have research interests and expertise that lie outside the scope of the therapeutic areas covered by the core material covered by the module, this assignment is potentially open to investigations in any area of pharmacy. To reiterate, if your supervisor has a research interest in, for instance, cancer or schizophrenia and you would like to pursue these topics for your project, they are as open to study for this assignment as an investigation into core MPH210 topics such as COPD or Crohn’s Disease.
The key difference between this assignment and the literature review assigned in MPH209 is that a greater emphasis will be placed on the gathering and analysis of published numerical data, usually from clinical trials, in order to arrive at a clear and perhaps novel conclusion in relation to the title set.
In order to help students achieve this goal, sessions early in the terms will introduce evidence based medicine. Obviously this is a topic that will be taught in much greater depth within level three, and this assignment should be classed an opportunity to start developing the required skills in a semi-independent learning mode. As such we should expect to allow some latitude in the depth and breadth of the numerical analysis conducted. As the students will have benefitted by having had the experience of performing a literature search within MPH209 and will have had extensive feedback on that assignment, it is reasonable to set the bar a little higher as to what is expected in relation to the literature searching and referencing aspects of the MPH210 dissertation, as well as anticipating a generally higher standard of writing.

- Introduction:
- Outline your question and the aims of your literature search
- Set the scene of your topic, you may derive this information from text books and good quality websites which present official NHS or government information. In your background you will give definitions and explain key information which will help the reader to understand your topic.
- Methodology:
- Outlines your search strategy, key words, search limits imposed, number of papers included and those not included and why they were discarded.
- Results:
- Presentation of your literature findings and, therefore, the evidence for the proposition or therapeutic intervention you have been asked to investigate, must include evidence that you have critiqued the literature you have included and acknowledged any limitations. As stated above, an emphasis will be placed on drilling down to the level of the numerical data found within the literature discussed and appraising the strengths and weaknesses of the conclusions drawn based upon the extent, quality and appropriateness of the data associated with these papers.

- A brief conclusion at the end of the report should outline your key findings
