Example on one of the discussions Board from Prof.

When examining Monet’s Boulevard de Capucines and Bouguereau’s Satyre and Nymphs, we must acknowledge each artist’s respective artistic backgrounds. While Monet is rooted in impressionism, Bouguereau is rooted in classicism. This avidly explains the stark contrast found between the two paintings.
Impressionism is characterized by five main qualities: realist subject matter, abstraction, scientific study of color effects, flat composition, and non-traditional cropping of subject matter. In Monet’s painting, we see all of these qualities exhibited. For example, this piece is relatively contemporary and focuses on a leisurely scene. We see figures in this scene, however, the painting isn’t necessarily about them but rather their lifestyle. Monet’s abstract application of paint also contributes to this. By intentionally portraying the figures in an undefined manner, the audience is drawn away from the human subjects and instead is coerced into interpreting the context by which the human figures are in. Monet also utilizes a scientific approach to color, particularly seen through the use of blues and yellows placed next to each other. We see a lightness in the sky and a vibrancy in the figures that is achieved by starting with a colored wash, as opposed to a monochromatic wash found in the classical glazing technique. Due to this, we also get a sense of flatness in the composition as there is no three-dimensional effect created by chiaroscuro. Additionally, we the figures in the background are almost as large as the figures in the foreground which eliminates the illusion of depth. Lastly, we see Monet utilize non-traditional image cropping. This is apparent in the way the building on the left-hand side of the piece is cut off mid render. This, paired with the vertical nature of the canvas leaves viewers wanting to see more.
Classicism, on the other hand, is characterized by eight main qualities: humanism, canon of proportions, contrapposto, historicism, chiaroscuro, linear perspective, aerial perspective, and balance of figures in the composition. In Bouguereau’s painting, we see mostly all of these qualities. The most apparent characteristics we see is Bouguereau’s emphasis on humanism or the human nude, and his usage of the canon of proportions, and contrapposto. This is drastic from Monet’s painting which intends to draw us away from the human form. The next thing that we notice in this piece is the drastic contrast in color. This is due to his use of chiaroscuro which deepens, intensifies, and ultimately darkens the piece. Classical paintings are also typically historical, mythical, or biblical in subject matter. This is also different from Monet’s contemporary piece

Assignment Overview
In this research assignment, you will analyze the role marketing plays in three different companies whose marketing activities have recently appeared in the news. You’ll prepare a paper describing the three companies’ approaches to marketing as exemplified in their recent marketing activities.
Deliverables
A two-page (500-word) or less describing three companies’ marketing activities
Step 1
Select three marketing topics from different companies whose marketing activities have recently appeared in the news.
You must discuss three different marketing topics in your paper. Examples of appropriate marketing topics include (but are not limited to):
Price
Products or Services
Advertising/Promotion
Marketing Strategy
Distribution/Supply Chain Management
So, for example, you might choose to talk about 1) the price of a Nike pair of shoes, 2) a new supply chain strategy from Pepsi, and 3) a new promotion from Levis. (This is only an example; you are free to choose your companies and the related marketing topics.)
Your selection of companies can come from any industry but be sure to choose companies that are interesting to you and that you want to learn more about.
Remember that for this assignment your goal is to analyze the role marketing plays in each company through the lens of your chosen topics and generalize the types of decisions marketers make.
Step 2
Describe the marketing topic you have selected for each company.
Be sure to state the specifics of the marketing activity. As appropriate, provide links to applicable websites in your paper and/or include references to articles or advertisements.
Step 3
Research each company.
Research each company and discuss possible reasons why the company has taken the marketing action that it did.
Based on the information available from your research you may or may not be able to determine precisely why the marketing activity has been performed.
You should, however, be able to discuss a variety of possible reasons why the company has taken the observed action.
Finally, list any ethical considerations that you think may have impacted the observed marketing strategy.

3.6 Case in Point: Cornerstone OnDemand Uses Big Data to Match Applicants to Jobs

Source: www.shutterstock.com

You are interviewing a candidate for a position at a call center. You need someone polite, courteous, patient, and dependable. The candidate you are talking to seems nice. But how do you know who is the right person for the job? Will the job candidate like the job or get bored? Will they steal from the company or be fired for misconduct? Don’t you wish you knew before hiring? Retail employers do a lot of hiring, given their growth and high turnover rate. According to one estimate, replacing an employee who leaves in retail costs companies around $4,000. High turnover also endangers customer service. Therefore, retail employers have an incentive to screen people carefully so that they hire people with the best chance of being successful and happy on the job. One company approaches this problem scientifically, saving companies time and money on hiring hourly wage employees. Evolv finds data-driven predictors of job performance and uses this information to help select the right fit for the job. In October 2014, Cornerstone OnDemand, a publicly traded talent management company, acquired Evolv for $42.5 million, potentially extending its reach.

The idea behind the software is simple: If you have a lot of employees and keep track of your data over time, you have access to an enormous resource. By analyzing data from a large number of employees, you can specify the profile of the “ideal” employee. The software captures the profile of high performers, and applicants are screened to assess their fit with this particular profile. As the database gets larger, the software does a better job of identifying the right people for the job. Employers such as Xerox are using the software developed by Evolv, where job applicants complete a test that takes half an hour. The system compares the applicant to the ideal profile, and the hiring manager gets a color-coded message from the system, where green indicates a high potential employee. Xerox won’t even look at a resume if the system generates a red sign.

The profile of the ideal candidate is often counterintuitive. For example, data on call center employees indicate that the best candidate has a short commute to work and participates in a small number of social networking sites. Contrary to what some people may think, job-hopping and unemployment status are not good predictors of effectiveness in the next job. One thing the system pays a lot of attention to is personality. It seems that for call center workers, being inquisitive results in leaving the job sooner. The system also measures honesty. For example, one question asks candidates to report how much computer skills they have, and then a follow-up question asks what control-V does.

The users of the system praise the time-savings and the results: Xerox saw increases in performance and reductions in the turnover of their employees after adopting the system. On the negative side, anti-discrimination lawyers think that this is new territory with potential legal downsides. Moreover, these systems are used only for hourly or retail workers where data exists for thousands of employees and the system can identify a reliable employee profile. Its applicability to higher-level, professional, and more unique jobs is not yet clear. How big data approaches change the face of selection continues to evolve, including becoming Cornerstone OnDemand.

Fair Trade

Fair Trade

Discipline: – Trade

Type of service: Case Study

Spacing: Double spacing

Paper format: APA

Number of pages: 3 pages

Number of sources: 3 sources

Paper details:

One of the hottest trends in retailing is the fair trade movement. Fair trade is defined as “the practice of purchasing from suppliers that pay workers a living wage, considerably more than the prevailing minimum wage, and offer other benefits such as onsite medical treatment” (Levy, Weitz, & Grewal, 2019, p. 39). Retailers are realizing that consumers need to feel like a company is about more than making a profit in order to become (and remain) loyal brand supporters. As such, the list of B Corp certified companies is growing!

To help facilitate a lively discussion of this trend for our class, you will identify a FAIR TRADE retailer and conduct a mini-case study on its business. You’ll provide a brief history and background (How did it start? Growth? Fair trade principles? Sustainability? SWOT?), describe its financial situation (business model, retail channels utilized, yearly sales) as well as information about the relationship with its suppliers (US-based, international, labor practices, story telling). If available, you can also provide forecasting information for the company’s growth and sustainability.

You will also choose at least one example of the company’s product and describe the production process (materials, labor, shipping, supplier only or is there a direct retail option), highlighting the fair trade aspects. Include images in your paper or, if possible, bring the actual product to class on the assigned day we’ll discuss. On the day the case is due, you will need to be prepared to provide a 1-2 minute summary of your organization to the class, if called upon, as well as be prepared to answer questions and elaborate.

Memorandum

Rationale for requiring strict adherence to this template
Internal and external communications serve as a form of branding and can communicate an image; therefore, companies try to establish a “look-and-feel” in its communications that it believes most reflects its desired image. It is doubtful that companies use APA 6th ed. as the format foundation of its communications. Communication types will vary depending on whether the communication is internal (within the company) or external (outside of the company—such as clients or business alliances). For this assignment, a memo correspondence has been requested to simulate an internal correspondence between an employee and his or her manager.
As many sport organizations possess a strong marketing focus, do not be surprised if future employers expect strict adherence to its “communication guidelines.” For instance, Nike is as much a sport marketing company as it is a sporting apparel retailer. Some companies incorporate communication guidelines as part of its “brand guidelines.”
To protect its brand name recognition within its industry, a company may require its employees to write out the company name instead of using an abbreviation. The company may also require that its employees use “we” instead of “I” when communicating to clients as its representative. The company could be trying to institute a culture of “teamwork” among its employees, while expecting that “team” image to be reflected in communications to its clients.
Furthermore, requiring employees to communicate in the same format makes it easier for quick interpretation of information by the recipient. The more familiar a format becomes to the reader, the more natural it will be for the reader to review the information in the most efficient manner possible. In other words, your instructor asks that you help facilitate the grading process by following the format requested in this document.

How to utilize this memo template
There is a Word ™ and PDF ™ version of this template on eLC. The Word ™ template can be saved under a different file name on an employee’s (student’s) computer. Employees can then work from that memo template to ensure formatting consistency with memo boxes, headers, and footers. Also provided is a completed assignment (of a different book) to help gauge the quality expected of a submitted memo report.
The following sections will discuss specific requirements relating to the extra credit assignment.
Formatting the written sections of the assignment
Employees (students) are encouraged to use bullet points where appropriate. Business writing encourages a thorough, yet succinct, writing style.
The following are other formatting requirements to which employees should adhere when writing their extra credit assignments:

When using bullet points, use sentence punctuation when there is more than one sentence associated to the bullet. However, never punctuate the last sentence or phrase associated to a bullet, as the period encourages the reader’s eye to stop. By not using a period at the end of writing associated to a particular bullet, the reader’s eye to move quickly to the never bullet or paragraph

Orphan words (where only one word is on a line), such as above, are discouraged

While occasionally necessary, bulleted statements are intended to be concise

Writing should use a Calibri typeface with size 11 font

Do not use paragraph indentions for this paper. Rather, leave a space between paragraphs

First headings should be bold, and only the first word should be capitalized—unless it is a   proper noun

When referencing something from Veeck as in Wreck, employees are expected to consistently cite the book page (p. 25)

Citations should be in accordance with APA 6th edition

Do not use “I” in this paper; rather, write in third person (as in this example)

Please be consistent with tense (keep with either a past or present tense, though present is more common in business communications)

Do not end sentences with a preposition (e.g. to, for)

Avoid colloquialisms and slang in professional writing

Avoid unnecessary words, such as “really” and “very”

Sentence structure should flow and be easy to read

Sentence structures should vary to keep the reader interested

Length of paper is less important than quality of the information

There should be two lines following the completion of a paper section

By adhering to the above guidelines, employees are well on their way to receiving positive feedback.
Required sections for this assignment
There are three required sections for this assignment, which should be titled as follows:

Summarization of Veeck As In Wreck

Veeck’s influence upon event promotions

Building from Veeck’s innovations utilizing current technologies

Employees are able and encouraged to find other sources that support their opinions. The second and third sections of this assignment could benefit from the use of additional resources.
Grading criteria
In completing this assignment, it is expected that employees will read Veeck As In Wreck. Therefore, the writing should reflect a strong understanding of the book’s content; emphasizing Veeck’s many contributions sport event managers.
While this example is three (3) pages in length, the actual assignment can be no more than two (2) pages total (references do not count—and should be a separate page).
To receive full credit (5 points) on this assignment, employees (students) must adhere to the requested format, exhibit strong grammar, provide meaningful content, while properly citing all information they use.
The following are ways employees may not receive full credit (5 points):

If employees do not follow writing guidelines, they will automatically lose one (2) points

If writing quality is not to the level expected in a 4000 level class, they will lose (at minimum) one (1) point

If information is not cited properly, they will lose (at minimum) one (1) point

If the written content is not sufficient, they can lose “up to” three (3) points

Please note, it is not possible to lose more points than available with this assignment. Employees could, however, receive a grade of zero (0).
Employees will not get an opportunity to “re-do” this assignment, as the expectation is that they will work on these assignments diligently, and come to the manager (instructor) during his office hours with any questions prior to the deadline.
Please refer to the manager with any questions.

Gregg Rich
