Write a formal essay in response to the following question:
With reference to your extensive reading about assessment, discuss critically, and with particular reference to academic journal articles, the various ways in which pupils’ progression can be assessed and supported using formative assessment principles.
Background
Assessing pupils’ progress is a complex matter that now goes well beyond simple summative testing. It is now understood that summative and formative assessment are merely terms that describe different ways of interpreting and using the feedback that pupils give us in their daily work. However, as part of the daily business of learning, teachers and pupils are involved actively in a range of formative assessment processes which monitor, track, record and support individual pupils’ progression, and make assessment an integral part of learning.
Directions:
Please use the description used by Popham (see word file – Chapter 1 Transformative Assessment) to describe formative assessment. You could start the work with the standard description of formative assessment by Dylan Wiliam (see Dylan Wiliam articles) and end it with the most recent description (transformative assessment) given by Popham
Explore (including pros and cons) at least 3 formative assessment methods used by teachers with pupils in the classroom.
Please include within the 3 methods the use of Questioning and Feedbacks as formative assessments. Explore also a third formative assessment method.
If possible, list other formative assessment methods that teachers could use with pupils in the classroom.
Explore and highlight the concept that formative assessments are beneficial to both pupils and teachers. In fact teachers are able to optimise and tailor their practice for a specific class and, more in detailed, for a specific student. Formative assessments could help teachers to personalise their teaching methods to the needs of a particular class and/or individual student.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
You’ll know your essay “discusses and analyses critically key theoretical and research perspectives on how effective formative assessment of pupils’ progression can be carried out” if:
- You wrote about formative assessment theory and how that is likely to enable you to assess pupils’ progression.
- You make sure that you write about what theoreticians and researchers have to say. You make reference to an extensive range of reading
- You show, by the way you analyse what you learned from your reading about assessment theory and research, that you know and understand the thinking behind the various theoretical perspectives on formative assessment that are out there
- You are able to make clear your critical understanding of that thinking by the way you state ideas, acknowledge where they came from, explain what you think they mean and challenge, using evidence from your reading, how valid they seem to be, especially where there is disagreement in the literature.
Your answer should be 1000 words in length and address the following criteria:
Discuss and analyse (critically) key theoretical and research perspectives on how effective formative assessment of pupils’ progression can be carried out.
Support and explore thinking, where appropriate, by use of references to: issues covered in course classes; relevant material from core texts; course documentation and wider academic reading, including some academic journals.
Is written in an accurate, clear, structured and coherent manner, within the appropriate standards of academic presentation, including APA referencing conventions.

The standard is usually Times New Roman 12-point or equivalent
Spacing should be One-and-a-half line spacing.
