Global Supply Chain Management

       Assignment 1:

A modern supply chain is a dynamic network of great complexity. Thus, organisations should strive for developing supply chain strategies, configuring supply chains to maximise performance and coping with technological changes.

Based on the above statement, you are asked to choose a sector/industry (e.g., food, technology, healthcare, retail, services, automotive), and critically discuss:

  • What is the design and implementation of supply chain strategies within the chosen sector from the selected industry. (Select a sector/industry eg manufacturing from a company but not the whole company eg Coca Cola). Create an overview process flow diagram to show the various steps involved.

You should support your arguments by bringing into the discussion at least 2 examples of companies that belong to the selected sector/industry. Critically analyse how the different supply chain strategies in the 3 companies contribute the successful implementation of design of supply chain.

  • How do the organisations configure their supply chains through collaboration, lean principles and agility .  Identify and analyse examples of ways in which companies in your chosen industry collaborate with each other to develop lean or agile approaches. Your analysis might involve different companies than your earlier answer, but the industry or sector must be unchanged.

  • How advanced technology (e.g., big data analytics, Internet of Things, cloud computing) are utilised by companies within the sector to maintain their competitive advantage. Provide a critical review of company sources (e.g. presentations to shareholders, annual reports) as well as peer reviewed sources. You should support your arguments by bringing into the discussion at least 2 examples of companies that belong to the selected sector/industry. Critically analyse how the different approach and utilization of advanced technology have maintained their competitive advantage.

Essay #2: Argument – 150 points

Assignment/Purpose:

Write an essay (3-4 pages typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12pt) that demonstrates your ability to reasonably argue a point of view in response to someone else’s argument.  Your paper must take a position on an issue and represent that position with reasoned arguments that help move the conversation forward by responding to others.

Your job for this assignment is to respond to an opinion letter/article from the New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/section/opinion) or other major newspaper.  You can disagree or agree with a difference.

Your essay/response will give your opinion on the topic and be supported by research.

  • You must cite from the article given.
  • You must also find 1-2 more articles about your topic to help support or to provide the counter arguments for your essay.
  • In total, then, you must have 2-3 sources in your essay, including the one you selected.
  • The citations will be in MLA 8 format.

Audience:

Your audience for this assignment is the general public.  This is a letter to the editor in response to a previously published piece of writing, and it must be written to the original writer, but with the understanding that it will (if we were to send it in) be published for anyone to read.  In other words, you can start your essay with “Dear Editors/Writer’s name,” but remember that it will be read by anyone that reads the paper online.  (This is a “pretend” assignment…but you could actually send your letter if you feel strongly about it!)

Due Date:

The first draft is due on Blackboard and in class on 6/25/2018 (20 points)

The final draft of your paper is due on 6/26/2018 by NOON online (Blackboard) (130 points)

The essay paperwork (prework, drafts, peer review, self-evaluation) are due in class on 6/27/2018

Evaluation:

Your paper’s evaluation will be based on the following criteria:

  • The writing follows the requirements of the assignment
  • The writing clearly summarizes the original opinion as well as your own opinion and research.
  • The writing clearly supports and explains your opinion as well as responds to other opinions/arguments.
  • The paper successfully uses at least one “trustworthiness” technique
  • The paper successfully avoids argument fallacies.
  • The paper cites 2-3 sources using MLA 8 citation
  • Transitions show relationships between information.
  • Surface errors are few and do not distract the reader.  The text reveals evidence of editing, crafting, and proofreading
  • How well has the writer handled the entire writing process, including participation in writing/editing workshops and meeting all deadlines?

Team Application: Implementing a Health Information Technology Project, Part V: The Project Schedule (Estimating and Allocating Resources)

After a project’s activities have been defined and sequenced as a basis for the its project schedule, the next step in generating the schedule is to estimate the type and quantity of resources (i.e., materials, supplies, equipment, and/or people) required to perform each activity, as well as the approximate duration of time (i.e., the number of work periods) needed to complete each activity with the estimated resources. Once a project’s resource allocations and activity duration approximations have been reflected in its schedule, it is extremely important to review these estimations to confirm that the overall project schedule as generated is a realistic baseline by which to track the project’s progress.

To prepare for this Team Application Assignment, review the information about estimating and allocating project resources that was presented in Week 4’s Learning Resources. Make sure to consider how the real-world perspectives on scheduling resources that were offered by the presenters in Week 4’s Media Segment might apply to the work that your team will do this week in continuing to create its own representation of a project schedule.

To complete this Team Application Assignment, work with your team to review and discuss each individually generated Project Schedule document that was previously posted to your designated Team Collaboration Area by the team member who developed it during Part IV of the Implementing a Health Information Technology Project assignment. After completing your review and discussion, select one of the posted Project Schedule documents for use in Part V of the Implementing a Health Information Technology Project assignment, which will focus on estimating and allocating resources for the chosen Project Schedule.

Next, work as a team to assign a different project deliverable to each team member. You will assume individual responsibility for the specific project deliverable that you have been assigned. Using the Project Schedule document selected by the team, you will continue the planning process for your assigned deliverable by working on your own in either Microsoft Project 2010 or OpenProj 1.4 to estimate the resources—such as materials, people, equipment, or supplies—required to perform that deliverable’s project activities (which were previously defined and sequenced in the specific Project Schedule document that was created for Part IV of the Implementing a Health Information Technology Project assignment and then chosen by the team for use in completing Part V of the assignment). As part of this process, you will individually update a copy of the chosen Project Schedule document by first creating and allocating hypothetical resources for the project, then estimating activity durations for each of these hypothetical resources, and finally reviewing (and, as needed, revising) your estimations for the hypothetical resources and their respective activity durations to ensure that the schedule that has been generated for them is a realistic and workable one for the project.

In 2010, New York State passed a law that required its school districts to develop more stringent teacher-evaluation systems. Local school districts and their unions were assigned a task for specifying certain criteria of their new systems by January 17, 2013. New York City was going to receive benefits of $250 million in aid and another $200 million in grants if the agreement was reached on a new system, a 4% increase in state aid. However, as the January 17th deadline approached, Bloomberg and New York Teachers’ Union were not even close to reaching an agreement.

As a top negotiator, you were asked to design a strategy using a win-win situation for both parties.

Identify the four steps of Integrative Negotiation Process, and conduct analysis of how these four steps might help you in designing your negotiation strategy.

Just about everything in special education is done in teams. To increase your effectiveness as an educator, it is important for you to understand the role you assume as a team member.

Using material introduced in Chapters 1–3 of your textbook as well as other course material, formulate a 3–5-page (excluding title page and references) description and philosophy about collaborative school consultation that reflects your approach, as follows:

Define how you go about participating in teams.

Describe how you currently provide or would provide consultation and receive it, particularly in relation to specially designed instruction and program organization and development for children and youth and families.

Discuss which collaboration models resonate with you.

Describe the ethical frameworks you use for decision making. Be sure to include information about your verbal, written, and body language communication styles in your self-evaluation.

Use your textbook readings on pages 64–67 and other resources to research the appropriateness of your approach.

Include 2–3 peer-reviewed articles from the Capella library as evidence to support your approach. Look at the relevance of teaching methodologies and apply them to your instructional and collaborative skills. How well do these methodologies apply to you?

Reflect on and identify what you need to learn to improve your approach.

After writing the first two parts of your self-study, engage in a dialogue with a colleague about your self-study. Incorporate your colleague’s feedback into your paper. Describe and analyze how the feedback informs your instructional practices, decisions, and/or interactions with colleagues, families, administrators, or paraeducators.

Unit Five
Project Management

A project differs from your daily activities and is usually undertaken because of a need for a change.  In this module you will learn about planning for a project and becoming a change agent for the project.  There may be an opportunity for you to lead a project at some time and the fundamentals of project management will be helpful.

Required Readings:

Dunn, R.  Haimann’s Healthcare Management:  Chapter 8

Oachs and Watters. Health Information Management: Concepts, Principles and Practice. Fifth Edition. Chapter 27.

Assignment: 400 points

The HIM Department at Good Health Care Systems is going to be moved to a new location outside of the hospital.  The new location will be remodeled according to the department’s needs and is moving into a building with the Billing Office, which is located about 1 mile from the hospital.   Because the new location is actually smaller than the current location, the department will be switching to remote coding, so coders will have to be set up to work at home.  This is all due to the successful implementation of an electronic medical record.  There are old paper medical records which are going to be stored at a facility that is contracted by the hospital. The Release of Information area will be moved so patients will need to find the new location when they are in need of services.

Complete each of the following five exercises. The project that you are submitting should be in a report format.  One that you would submit to a committee or to a boss when you are talking about the project.   The report format will be considered in the grading.

  1. Prepare a project charter document that includes project objectives, deliverables, high-level project activities, assumptions and constraints, an estimated project schedule, and estimated project costs. 200 points
  2. Prepare a roles and responsibilities organizational chart for the project. 50 points
  3. Prepare a project task list. For each task, indicate the task predecessor(s), the resources assigned to work on the task, and the estimated work effort for each resource. 50 points
  4. Document the project risks. For each risk, indicate the probability factor, the impact factor, and the contingency plan. 50 points
  5. Prepare a communication plan for the project. Include the communication mode for each type of communication. 50 points

PROJECT CLOSEOUT

Project closeout is important for both the customers and the project team. The customers need at least two things:

Evidence that their requirements have been met.

Documentation of the project team’s responsibilities, if any, following the end of the project.

Suppose the “project” is buying a new car. Then the first deliverables above would be the keys and title, and the second would be the warranty, which includes the owner’s responsibility to perform prescribed maintenance, and the dealer’s responsibility to repair any defects attributable to vehicle design, assembly, preparation, or delivery.

The project team, on the other hand, should receive a Post-Implementation Report. This can be either a formal document, or an informal briefing, but it should consist of:

Distillation of feedback. What went wrong? What went right? Why?

Lessons learned. In the future, what should be done differently?

Derived best practices. What procedures should be changed, to implement the lessons learned?

Suppose the project was building a house. Feedback might include a comment from the appliance installer, saying that he has been required to remove the attic insulation over the kitchen ceiling before installing the cooker hood, and this task had been a time-consuming nuisance. The lesson learned would be as follows: always install appliances that require ducting before insulating the attic. The best practice might be to either write or revise the construction checklist, specifying that these two tasks must always be performed in the preferred order.

Assignment: Referring to the project you discussed in the previous SLPs,

What was the most significant feedback you received, following project completion? From what sources?

What lessons did you learn from the feedback?

How did the lessons you learned change the way you would approach similar projects, in the future?
