Learning Activity #1 – Theme 1 & 2

Fayol’s organizing function is demonstrated when management gathers and synchronizes the resources of the organization (people, capital, and physical) to complete the goals set out in the planning stage.

One of the long-term goals set out by the Biotech’s strategic team is to increase sales in North America by 15%.  The short-term goal to accomplish this increase in sales is to create a sales campaign that targets the Canadian market where sales have been dropping off ever since Nestle foods has sought to enter the supplement market.

One short-term goal that has come from the plan to increase sales is a contract with Walmart Canada to sell private labeled protein bars for Biotech.  Walmart is known for getting the cheapest product they can because of the volume they sell.  The contract would provide for 300 million bars every 3 months at a 2-cent reduction in price per bar. The first bars would be delivered to stores in two months.  Production for protein bars in the Canadian plant is headed by Maurice Chevalier.  He looks over the contract specifications and begins to set out goals and objectives that he would need to meet the order.  There are three problems the order has:

  • To make the required profit margin of 3 cents per bar, costs have to be cut by 1.5%;
  • Recent supplies for the products have increased 1 cent because of a recent increase of shipping costs on Whey supplies from the US Chicago supplier;
  • Three new full-time line employees would have to be retained from the seasonal hiring in October.  Although this is often how line staff are hired, the retention would not increase the budget but will affect the staffing schedules.

Write an email to the Operations Vice President outlining the goals and objectives Chevalier could use to organize the production line to meet the contract needs while still maintaining the 3-cent profit for Biotech.  Be sure to explain why you have listed the ideas as goals or objectives.

Order description:

Planning is the key to successful completion of this course and your overall program of study. The Individual Success Plan (ISP) assignment requires early collaboration with the course faculty and your course mentor. You will need to establish a plan for successful completion of (1) deliverables associated with weekly course objectives, (2), required practice immersion hours, and (3) deliverables associated with your capstone project.

Access the “Individual Success Plan” resource in the Topic Materials. Read the information in the resource, including student expectations and instructions for completing the ISP document.

Use the “Individual Success Plan” to develop a personal plan for completing your practice hours and how topic objectives will be met. Include the number of hours you plan to set aside to meet your goals.

A combination of 100 supervised clinical hours in community health and leadership areas will be obtained through the application of the objectives listed in the Guidelines for Undergraduate Field Experiences manual.

Practicum immersion experiences are required in a community health setting. Community-based settings should encourage community integration and involvement; expand accessibility of services and supports; promote personal preference, strengths, dignity; and empower people to participate in the economic mainstream.

According to HealthyPeople.gov, educational and community-based programs and strategies are designed to reach people outside of traditional health care settings. These settings may include schools, worksites, health care facilities, and communities. Community health and leadership practice immersion can occur in the same site and in conjunction with the evidence-based project in the NRS-490 course.

If you are a registered nurse in Washington, your practicum experience must include a minimum of 50 hours in a community health setting.

Students should apply concepts from prior courses to critically examine and improve their current practice. Students should also integrate scholarly readings to develop case reports that demonstrate increasingly complex and proficient practice.

Consider the challenges you expect to encounter as you continue the practice hour and competency requirements throughout this course. How might you overcome these challenges?

You can renegotiate these deliverables with your faculty and mentor throughout this course and update your ISP accordingly.

Once your ISP has been developed and accepted by your course faculty, you will have your course mentor sign it at the beginning of, and upon completion of, each assignment that incorporates practice immersion hours. You will track all course practice immersion hours in the ISP.

APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.

You are not required to submit this assignment to Turnitin.

    Do we have questions about footnotes? You include a footnote at the end of the sentence ONLY when you have included a direct quote in your statement, such as Adams stated “who cares about the lazy Virginia farmers.”   In another journal entry Abigail called the rebels “weak and illiterate.”

    To insert the footnote, place the cursor where you want your notation, and then click on reference and insert footnote.

    When paraphrasing multiple sources but not quoting directly, then you should still cite your sources at the end of the paragraph. For instance, Roger Stills described Shaysites as reckless.  This viewpoint is different from Bob Mackey, who believed Shaysites were less focused than Daniel Shays, but aware of their mission.

    If I decide not to include a specific example, but I thought I was interesting and the reader might want to know, then I can footnote that information as well.

    Inserting and formatting an image is also easy.  Find the image you want to include, then copy and paste into your essay, or select “insert” and “pictures.”  Once the image appears in your essay, right click on the image, and select “wrap text,” and choose from the list of options.  “Tight” and “square” are most useful for news/journal/essay style works.

Read Case 6.3: Electronic Timing System for Olympics on pages 275-276 of the textbook. For this assignment, you will assess and use the correct support tool to develop a decision tree as described in Part “a” of Case 6.3. Analyze and apply the best decision-making process to provide answers and brief explanations for parts “a”, “b”, “c”, and “d”. The answers and explanations can be placed in the same Excel document as the decision tree.

Develop a decision tree that can be used to solve Chang’s problem. You can assume in this part of the problem that she is using EMV (of her net profit) as a decision criterion. Build the tree so that she can enter any values for p1, p2, and p3 (in input cells) and automatically see her optimal EMV and optimal strategy from the tree.

If p2 = 0.8 and p3 = 0.1, what value of p1 makes Chang indifferent between abandoning the project and going ahead with it?

How much would Chang benefit if she knew for certain that the Olympic organization would guarantee her the contract? (This guarantee would be in force only if she were successful in developing the product.) Assume p1 = 0.4, p2 = 0.8, and p3 = 0.1

Suppose now that this is a relatively big project for Chang. Therefore, she decides to use expected utility as her criterion, with an exponential utility function. Using some trial and error, see which risk tolerance changes her initial decision from “go ahead” to “abandon” when p1 = 0.4, p2 = 0.8, and p3 = 0.1.

In your Excel document,

Develop a decision tree using the most appropriate support tool as described in Part a.

Calculate the value of p1 as described in Part b. Show calculations.

Calculate the possible profit using the most appropriate support tool as described in Part c. Show calculations.

Calculate risk tolerance as described in Part d. Show calculations.
