Socialization refers to the lifelong process by which we acquire the cultural values and skills needed to function as human beings. Socialization is unique to humans becasue humans have few, if any, instincts. Thus, human development must be shaped by caregivers and guided by cultural norms.

Agents of socialization are persons, groups, or institutions which teach children about the norms and values of their culture. The primary agents of socialization are the family, schools, the peer group, toys and games, and the mass media.
