hey have two older children; Fran aged 13 and Mark aged 12. They also now have Olivia, aged 15 months.
When Fran and Mark were infants, Isobel took a maternity break until Mark started nursery school and so put her career œon hold. However, when she returned to work she was encouraged to retrain to keep up-to-date and then she was promoted to manage a high profile specialist service, rehabilitating stroke victims.
So when Olivia was born, Isobel felt she needed to return to work after 5 months. Initially Jan managed to arrange a paternity break of 4 weeks, and then his mother helped out for a few more weeks, but after this they decided to employ a nanny, Egle, from 8am-18.00 Mondays to Friday.
Isobel looks forward to returning home after work to the three children, and especially to a ˜welcome’ from Olivia, but she is experiencing that Olivia seems indifferent and even unresponsive to her when she gets home. Olivia’s previously stable sleep pattern is changing too; she wakes up during the night and cries before settling.
Isobel, who compares this to the routines she established with her other children when they were infants, blames Egle and feel she is not caring adequately for Olivia.
At the same time, Fran and Mark are both asking for parental support with their homework. Particularly Fran, who, together with two classmates, have been singled out to develop a new astronomy project by their teacher which will involve independent research and design into the constellation system.
Jan often returns home much later than Isobel, and her time now seems more taken up with responding to Olivia’s needs in the early parts of the evening.
