Organizational Communication

COMM 318A “ Spring 2014 “ Real-World Application Paper (RAP) (50 points)

Real-World Application Paper (RAP)
:
Organizational communication concepts can be observed as they play out in the world around us.  For the RAP select a movie (or book) where you see two organizational communication concepts played out.  You will briefly summarize the movie’s storyline, clearly identify the two concepts (displaying you have a clear understanding of the concepts), and then explain how they were played out in the movie.  You must use a minimum of two credible sources for your paper (course textbook and the movie/book), but you may use additional sources.  Wikipedia is NOT considered a credible source.

¦

One electronic copy needs to be uploaded to Blackboard (by 11:59 p.m. CST on April 21st).
The RAPs will be run through SafeAssignment (or SafeAssign) via Blackboard which verifies students are doing and submitting their own original work.

Instructions:

v

Select a movie (or book) where you observe organizational concepts we have studied in class played out.

ü

The movie (or book) must be pre-approved by the professor.  Thursday, April 17th is the final day to have a movie (or book) approved.

ü

Briefly summarize the plot of the movie (or book) in your own words.  If you use a source to help you summarize the movie (or book), make sure to cite the source.

¦

v

Clearly identify TWO concepts that we have covered or will cover (if you read ahead you may want to address a topic we have not yet covered) that you see played out in the movie.

ü

Briefly explain each concept to demonstrate you have a clear understanding of the concept.  Remember, even if you are summarizing content from the text, you still need to cite the text.

ü

After briefly explaining each concept, briefly explain how you see it played out in the movie (or book).  This is similar to what is expected in RARs.

v

For the RAP, please include the following components:

Introductory paragraph: Introducing the movie and previewing the two concepts.

Paragraphs briefly explaining the movie, briefly identifying and explaining each concept, and connecting each concept to the movie content.

Concluding paragraph: Summarizing the movie and the concepts you selected to focus on for your analysis.

v

Follow the œWritten Assignments Guidelines outlined in the course syllabus.

v

A minimum of two credible sources is required “ the textbook and the movie.  However, you may use more sources.  Remember Wikipedia is NOT a credible source.

v

The RAP should be at least two pages in length, no more than five pages.  (A References page does not count as one of the pages for the paper total.)

v

A Reference(s) page should be attached at the end of the RAP with the sources you cite within your RAP.
