Paper instructions:

Write your own sonnet

Instructions;

Now that you’ve carefully read and discussed some famous sonnets by Shakespeare and Browning, try your hand at writing a sonnet of your own.

Feel free to explore ANY subject in your poem. Here’s the only rule: 14 lines and aim for 10 syllables in each line. (it’s okay if you have 8, 9, 11, or 12 syllables in a line but try for 10.)

Your poem can rhyme if you wish, but rhyming is not required for this assignment. Traditionally, sonnets rhymed, but many poets writing sonnets today skip rhyming.

I encourage you to use the vocabulary and syntax of 2020 so that your sonnet feels fresh and accessible to readers in 2020. For example, avoid ’tis and thee and thou, which were common in the 1600s but not used now in poems.

Give your poem a title, not just Sonnet #1.
