Conscience awakens us to values and challenges that may even move some to act like Huck Finn and break the law for a friend or to challenge conventional wisdom about the system of slavery in England that we see in Amazing Grace. Thomas More suffered death rather than betray his conscience. Draw on each of these examples of persons who sacrifice health and even life itself rather than betray their deepest convictions. What provokes these people of conscience to act at such great cost? Why couldn’t they simply pretend to accept the beliefs and systems that others pretended sometimes to embrace? Give examples from the films and chapter.
