An inventory of outdoor recreation sites can be organized in one of several different ways:
? by type of site (state park, local park, school recreation center, private golf course);
? by type of activity (land or wateroriented,
group or individual); and
? by service area (neighborhood, city, county, region, state).
Whichever organization approach is used, an inventory should represent an effort to systematically collect information on
the characteristics of each outdoor recreation site. The primary purpose for undertaking an inventory of outdoor recreation
sites is to determine the number and type of facilities that are available for recreational use in your neighborhood (i.e., the
“supply” of outdoor recreation opportunities).
For Laboratory Project #1, you are to inventory outdoor recreation sites in your neighborhood. For the purpose of this
laboratory project, your “neighborhood” is defined as the area within a onemile
radius of your residence (approximately a
mile area). A minimum of five (5) sites should be inventoried by means of field survey. Those who reside
outside of the urbanized portion of the Baltimore metropolitan area may need to increase the radius from their residence in
order to inventory the minimum number of sites.
The following information should be collected for each outdoor recreation site that you inventory:
? name and location of site;
? type of site (state park, local park, school recreation center, private golf course, etc.);
? ownership (public, quasipublic,
or private);
? unique natural or cultural resources (stream valley, distinctive geologic feature, scenic overlook, historical or
archaeological site, etc.);
? number and type of facilities (tot lots, basketball courts, multiuse
courts, baseball/softball diamonds, picnic tables,
campsites, trails, golf holes, etc.);
? use characteristics (general groups of people who are allowed to use the site, availability of organized programs,
accessibility to special populations, hours/seasons of operation, onsite
staff, fees, etc.);
? site support facilities (parking spaces, lighted facilities, water fountains, rest rooms, concessions, signage, etc.); and
? site maintenance characteristics (grass cutting, trash removal, equipment repair, etc.).
The information that you collect should be organized and recorded on some type of form (a spreadsheet or database is
