This course is a chronological, thematic and comparative study of the indigenous art of sub-Saharan Africa, the African diaspora, Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Australia. The course addresses prehistoric to contemporary forms of artistic expression in these regions within their historical, geographical, religious and sociocultural contexts. In addition, the course will assess the politics of colonialism, the impact of globalization, and the Western world’s economic and religious hegemony over once self-reliant kingdoms and the states in the third world._x000D_
This course focuses on the cultural wealth and diversity of Africa and Oceania. Specific groups from each of these areas of the world are studied with focus on the differing roles of the visual arts within each culture. The historical depth and religious, economic, or political orientation of each art tradition is explored. This course is designed for art majors who are interested in non-western cultures as well as for students from a viariety of backgrounds and disciplines, including history, ethnic studies, humanities and education._x000D_
