Week 4 – Assignment: Assess and Develop Resilience, Strengths, and Virtues: Reflection Paper and Drawing

Turnitin® enabled This assignment will be submitted to Turnitin®.

Instructions

Adapted from: https://positivepsychologyprogram.com/positive-psychology-exercises/#best-possible-self

  • Part 1- Review three evidence-based resiliency programs that include a variety of exercises for participants.
  • Part 2- Perform the exercise below.
  • Part 3- Write a reflection paper or make an audio recording after visualizing your “best possible self” two days during the week. Pick a day at the start of the week, and then another day at the end of the week. This exercise has been adapted from Sheldon and Lyubomirsky, 2006. You can choose to draw a picture of your best self or write about it.

This exercise is more effective when you are specific. Imagine the future in detail, a new job, new home, where you want to live. The more specific you are, the more engaged you will be in identifying your strengths and enhancing resilience.

Set a timer or stopwatch for 15 minutes, in this time you are to think about your best possible future self.

See your life the way you always imagined it would be like, your best possible self. Picture that you have performed to the best of your abilities and potential and have achieved the things you wanted in life.

Do not censure yourself or edit grammar or punctuation. Just focus on writing all your thoughts and emotions in an expressive way or make a drawing of your thoughts and feelings.

Be sure to have several sheets of paper available for this exercise.

Reflect on your feelings and responses after completing the initial exercise. Think about the following questions: What effects did this exercise have? Did this exercise affect you more emotionally or does it affect your current self-image? Did it motivate or inspire you? How? Did it make you want to change anything? Explain. How did this exercise affect you overall? Which character strengths did you identify?

Feel free to include the drawing with the reflection paper and upload. No art experience is necessary. The drawing can be abstract or anything you choose.

Optional: You may want to meet with your professor via Zoom or Skype and discuss the exercise.

Length: 3 to 4 pages

Resources: Cite the 3 evidence-based resiliency programs you reviewed.

Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards where appropriate.

how the proponents and opponents of slavery used the themes that frame this course when making their arguments (Mobility, Democracy, Capitalism, and Difference

Work type:   Research paper

Format:         Other : Other (See instructions)

Pages:            2 pages ( 550 words, Double spaced

Academic level:       Undergrad. (yrs 1-2)

Subject or discipline:         History

Title:   Writer’s choice

Number of sources:           2

Paper instructions:

write an essay that demonstrates how the proponents and opponents of slavery used the themes that frame this course when making their arguments (Mobility, Democracy, Capitalism, and Difference). You should identify the authors’ main point, and utilizing two of the four themes, examine how they defended their position. Your paper should conclude by explaining why some contemporaries of slavery may have found certain arguments compelling, while others found them offensive (to conclude effectively, you will need to explain the historical context in which these texts were written, based on what you have read in the text and learned in class discussion).

You will talk about the two pro-slavery, “Stephen’s cornerstone speech” and David Chisty on “king cotton” and two anti-slavery, “declaration of Sentiments” and ‘Fredrick Douglass”.

Your paper should briefly introduce your paper’s topic or question and provide a thesis statement. In a paper of this size, your introduction and thesis statement should appear on the first page, in the paper’s first paragraph.

Your paper should show that you reasoned through the evidence in a fair-minded way. In other words, you should state (paraphrase) what your evidence says and not what you wish it said or think it should say. You need to state the evidence fairly, even if you think it wrong or offensive.

Your paper should use evidence to answer the historical question. You need to explain how the evidence answers the question. The easiest way to figure this is to think through your evidence and argument using one or more of the key concepts for this course.

Your paper should briefly explain an implication or limitation of your analysis. For an implication, you might consider how your analysis sheds light on one of the course’s key terms. For a limitation, you might note which key concepts your analysis does not (or cannot) address.

Your paper should develop and organize your thoughts clearly and logically. Outlining is a necessary, but not required, step in writing a well-organized paper.

Your paper should draw a conclusion that addresses the paper’s chief topic or question and that states your answer to the question or your contribution to the topic.

Discussion Forums

General Guidelines:

The discussion forums provide an opportunity for a collaborative and informative dialogue among peers. The expectation is that students have completed the assigned readings prior to engaging the discussion topic and have conducted independent research into the assigned prompts. This allows the discussions to remain focused and relevant.

Each forum activity consists of two postings, a primary thread and a reply posting. Again, this is a two-part activity. Both the original and reply posting must be submitted for the activity to be considered complete. Discussion activities are excluded from the late work policy. This is a “conversation” between classmates, so it must be timely.  Discussion grades will only be posted after the Unit deadline, to allow everyone an opportunity to participate. You may not go back and address discussion topics once the Unit has been completed. The deadline to complete each discussion activity has been identified in the course schedule.

Part I – Original Post/Thread Guidelines:

The original post/thread will always be due 48 hours ahead of the unit deadline. This allows your peers the opportunity to offer a meaningful reply.

Each discussion activity involves an element of independent research and critical analysis. I will post the discussion question at the beginning of a unit. The questions will address your understanding of central themes in the textbook and your ability to think critically about the course material to apply it to real life situations. The intent is to go beyond the textbook.

The minimum research criteria isone reputable source. You may use a scholarly article, but that is not necessary.Other examples of reputable sources include well known and trustworthy newspapers, news magazines, news websites, a court case or an actual law, and government websites. The course textbook, reference materials, Wikipedia, internet search engines, blogs and similar items are examples of unacceptable sources on the collegiate level.

The minimum writing requirement for the original post is 200 of your own words (excluding cited or paraphrased information from the word count). Your responses are to be in essay/paragraph format. Be sure to fully address each prompt and cite supporting evidence. The grade for the primary post will be determined by the quality, depth and originality of your writing. Finally, provide a word count at the end of the post.

Part II – Reply Posting Guidelines:

The second part of each discussion forum involves replying to an original post offered by at least one of your peers. You may choose to reply more often, but the minimum expectation is for each student to engage in a dialogue with one person in each forum. Please reply to someone who does not have any replies, so that everyone may receive some degree of feedback. Your reply does not involve the same level of rigor as the original post, but it must be of substantial academic and intellectual value. Be sure to directly address the main points made in the original post and even offer additional sources to consider.

Simply cheering on your peers with phrases like “Good posting” or “I agree” will not suffice for this assignment. This is an opportunity for real exchange of ideas, so make the most of the opportunity to teach and learn from your classmates. Any personal attacks are grounds for immediate removal from the course and possibly the college.

Again, your grade will be based on the quality and originality of your feedback. The minimum writing requirement for a reply post is 100 of your own words (excluding cited or paraphrased information from the word count). Finally, provide a word count at the end of the reply.
