A response paper is a critical analysis of a primary source based on the historical context in which it was written. This means that in order to write your paper you must use not only the primary source, but the textbook as well. Remember from the primary source worksheet that these “pieces of the past” were created for a reason. When you write your response paper, you should be trying to decipher what that reason was. Connect it to the time period in which it was created and the events that were occurring. What was its purpose and why was the author or artist motivated to create the document? What does this document tell us about an event, person, idea, etc.? A well-written response paper should start with a brief description of the historical context (no more than one paragraph) and then analyze why the source was important and why it was created.

Do not just summarize the source! I have read all of these primary sources and do not need to hear them over again. Focus on analysis, not summary.  _____________________________________________________

Master Barber, Darrin Lyons Stresses the Importance of Professionalism in Any Industry – YouTube

This interview is with a Master Barber, Mr. Lyons. It is unrelated to healthcare, but it still applies to professionalism. No matter what industry you decide to choose, there is a lesson with every experience. Mr. Lyons shared a story about his unpleasant experience in a barber shop. He stated that if you continue to stay with a certain business [or organization], then you should still hold the professional levels high. Do you agree with his statement? Why or why not?

For this assignment, conduct scholarly research on a different private or individualistic act that could be regarded as a broader social problem or social issue, something other than suicide. You may choose one of the following or a topic of your own:

In an essay, address the following:

Thoroughly explain what the sociological imagination is

Thoroughly examine how and why the sociological imagination helps understand the personal problem you chose as your topic for this essay

Compare and contrast the outside research you find on your topic with the textbook’s descriptions of sociological studies of suicide, specifically.
