Activity 4: Minority of the Mentally Ill (100 points)

After reading the assigned readings and relevant chapters in your textbook, please prepare the following:

 

  1. Outline the ways in which mental/behavioral illnesses, substance abuse/addiction, and deinstitutionalization are related to minority groups in corrections. Cite examples.

 

  1. Prepare an argument in support of, or against, institutionalizing or deinstitutionalizing the mentally ill and those who suffer with substance abuse/addiction. Cite examples and scholarly research.

 

  1. Include in your argument a discussion of whether drug courts appear to be a viable alternative in terms of success rates and cost effectiveness.
